2.1.1 Racism
Reflect on how you can become more aware of the fact that racism is still present in our society and how we are unconsciously still playing a role in fueling it.
Becoming more aware that racism is still present in society involves actively listening to the experiences of people who are impacted by it, rather than assuming equality has already been achieved. It requires recognising that racism is not only overt, but also exists in subtle, systemic ways that can be easy to overlook.
Part of this awareness is reflecting on how unconscious bias can shape thoughts, reactions, and decisions, even when there is no intention to harm. This includes noticing assumptions, language, or moments of discomfort, and being willing to question where these come from.
It also involves acknowledging privilege and how certain social positions can mean not experiencing the same barriers as others. Avoiding race or taking a “colour-blind” approach can unintentionally minimise the lived experiences of people affected by racism.
Ongoing learning, self-reflection, and openness to feedback are important in recognising how we may still play a role in maintaining these patterns. By staying aware and accountable, it becomes possible to respond more thoughtfully and support more equitable and culturally safe interactions in both personal and professional contexts.
