Reflect: Professional complaint

  • Have you ever been the subject of a complaint in your own industry, or know of a colleague who was?
    • How did you/they manage?
    • What was it like for you/them?

Yes i have had a complaint made about me as an NDIS provider. As a mental health support worker I have some interesting situations. The NDIS investigate the situations but found no findings against me as there had not been a breach. Evidence showed that I had operated within the bounds of my professional position. They handled it by interviewing me and checking through he correspondence between myself and the client. The communications evidenced that I had not been incorrect in my work role.

It was terribly upsetting for me, as i had been accused of some horrendous things. I engaged my union and a friend that had extensive legal knowledge. I felt protected however I wasn’t sure how the situation would be processed so I was quite concerned.

The investigator was kind and understanding and acknowledged that i had been treated unfairly. I learnt a lot about taking accurate notes, and recognised the importance of being in a union or with a regulatory body.
