I’ve become interested in the ways that the theories represent an evolving shift in consciousness over time. Partly a movement away from therapist and theory knows best towards client-centred care. Early psychoanalysis, led by Freud gave the therapist authority over the client. Carl Rogers brought in the Humanist approach of PCT, this meant that the shift to understanding that the client possessed the innate ability for growth. Later approaches including feminist and multicultural therapies meant more ways of collaboration and the integration of all theories in some way.
One concept that I found controversial relates to the work Freud. There remains ongoing debate about his theories on sexuality, particularly around reports of abuse from some of his young female clients. There remains ethical questions about power, gender and what power imbalances were being appeased by Freuds theory of psychosocial theory.
The second concept I found challenging relates to Carl Jung. While I respect and resonate with his explorations of the ‘unconscious’. I felt a little triggered by the idea that Jung ‘discovered’ the unconscious. I understand that in this comment it is important to recognise that this mean’s he theorised the idea. However I feel that the wests ideas of “discovery” can reflect the colonisation of others cultures knowledge rather than clear cut discovery.
